Arbella sails from Southampton, England.
April 7, 1630
(OS-3/28) [3/23] After several false starts due to poor weather, the ship, named for Lady Arbella Fienes, begins its voyage to North America. Owned by the Massachusetts Bay Company, it is the flagship of a 17 ship-fleet carrying some 1,100 passengers, as well as a cargo of animals, making it the largest single emigration ever to have left England. Its passengers include Lady Arbella’s husband, Isaac Johnson, John Winthrop, Thomas Dudley, his daughter Anne Bradstreet and her husband Simon Bradstreet, and Sir Richard Saltonstall. The ship arrives in Salem in June 1630.*
